Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Pharmacy and Clinic. Our awesome volunteers are how we accomlish our mission and we love them dearly!

Medical Volunteers

The VBA Clinic is staffed by dedicated retired and active physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and specialists. Our volunteers are scheduled on a monthly basis to meet the needs of the uninsured, under-insured and working poor of Charlotte County. Sovereign Immunity is granted to all of our Medical Volunteers upon contract approval through the Charlotte County Department of Health.


Physician:
Dr. Mark Asperilla
Must hold a current State of Florida License as a Physician, ARNP or Physician Assistant. Responsibilities include a thorough history of the patients complaints, performs appropriate examinations, determines the patient's medical needs, counsels, advises, and /or educates the patient upon each clinic visit, orders laboratory tests and imaging procedures when required, fill the medication needs of the patient through sample medications or a written prescription, complete physician referrals as needed, schedules follow up evaluation when necessary, and provides complete documentation in the medical record of the physician-patient interaction.


Clinic Nurse:
Cindy Neads
Must hold current State of Florida Nursing License. Responsibilities include assessment, planning, evaluation and documentation of nursing care of patients in accordance with VBA policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice.


Pharmacy: Rob Wellins, Pharmacist
Must hold a current State of Florida License as a Pharmacist. Dispenses prescription drugs to patients. Provides information about those drugs and helps patients understand the instructions provided by their doctors or other health practitioners.


Pharmacy Technician:
Receives and verifies prescriptions, prepares medication for clients through mixing, counting pills and labeling bottles, fills prescriptions, obtains approval from the pharmacist, completes patient paperwork, inventories and stocks medications.


Non-Medical Volunteers

The VBA Clinic is staffed by dedicated retired and full-time or part-time employed non-medical volunteers. Our volunteers are scheduled on a monthly basis to meet the needs of the uninsured, under-insured and working poor of Charlotte County.


Pharmacy Screener and Checker:
Carole Giarrante 
Processes applications, screens new patients for prescription eligibility, and handles the ordering of prescription refills.


Pharmacy Dispenser: Tim Morgan
Meets with every patient to dispense the medication; making sure the medications are correct, advising the patients of the number of refills, drug information, and asking the patient if they have questions for the Pharmacist.


Courier: Marge Daisey
Picks up donated pharmaceutical samples from various local doctors for use at the VBA Clinic and Pharmacy, completes documentation reports necessary for each donation.


Stocker: Betsy Langenberg
Inventories donated medications, checking for expired medications and assuring proper recordkeeping. All donated medications are sorted and categorized according to medication, dosage and expiration dates.


Patient Advocates: Cyndi Mitchell

Once a patient starts receiving medication from the VBA Pharmacy the patient is processed through the Patient Advocate Program to receive their medications directly from the Pharmaceutical Company that makes that medication. Patient Advocate volunteers help patients fill out the appropriate applications through PAPRXTracker, a web based computer program. The Patient Advocates obtain all information necessary for the patient to receive the medications and follows up to make sure the patient continues to receive these medications.


Data Entry:

Enters information into the electronic software database (MedWare), works 4-hour shifts.


Clinic Receptionist and Screeners:

Greets patients and visitors, maintains privacy and dignity of patients, assures patient confidentiality at all times, handles incoming phone calls according to established protocols, completes patient eligibility, books appointments, and makes appointment reminder calls. Also reviews and updates patient records, prepares patient records for evening appointments, and assists the Office Manager as needed. Screeners obtain financial information, health and allergy information, determining eligibility for VBA Clinic services.
