Port Charlotte, FL – March 27, 2015 – The Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Community Clinic (VBA) announced today that it will use a $30,000 leveraged grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation to hire a part-time physician/medical manager to expand patient care at the Charlotte County’s no-cost medical clinic and pharmacy.

Established in 2008, the Clinic, and its Pharmacy, have become the health-care safety net for Charlotte County, where it is estimated that over 30,000 residents either do not have health insurance or are underinsured. Staffed by teams of loyal volunteers and volunteer clinical staff, the VBA Clinic dispenses free medication and sees patients with non-urgent medical needs ranging from primary care to chronic disease management. In 2014 the Clinic filled over 10,000 prescriptions and saw over 6,000 patients. Said VBA Chief Executive Officer, M. Suzanne Roberts, M. Ed: “The Foundation’s grant will allow us to hire a part-time physician to better meet the demands of our ever-growing patient load.”

This is not the first time that Gulf Coast Community Foundation has blessed the VBA Clinic with a grant award. Previous Gulf Coast investments helped establish the VBA clinic, expand its income capacity, and fund special projects to increase the Clinic’s reach in Charlotte County. “The Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s recognition of the Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Community Clinic as a vital community asset is deeply appreciated. The Foundation is a special partner and has played a pivotal role in our growth over the last five years,” said Roberts.
